Finally Gordon Brown has acknowledged nobody wants him. He’s handed in his notice and will be gone within a few months. I’m not going to say much other than it’s about bloody time.
He’s never been PM material and annoys the hell out of me. Who knows what will happen now, LabLib ? We shall see…
Imagine a school where every child, regardless of background, is forced to worship Jesus by their teachers and where children learn about no other religion than Christianity. In this school kids answer science exam questions about Adam and Eve and are slapped by teachers if they do something wrong. Sex education is limited to telling the kids they should stay celibate until they’re married. Oh, and they must marry the opposite sex only. If asked about the rights and wrongs of homosexuality, teachers are required to condemn it and inform the child it is an inappropriate choice of lifestyle.
The picture I’ve just painted sounds like Britain a few decades ago. It sounds like a version Britain most of us have now turned our backs on. But I have not just taken you back in time, I have taken you to the Britain of Reverend George Hargreaves.
Who? I hear you say. George Hargreaves is a millionaire songwriter and also the leader of the Christian Party, a right-wing extremist Christian party. Ironically, George made his fortune by writing “So Macho”, the huge gay anthem of the 80s, in his days of being a ‘sinner’.
At this weeks election the Christian party received more than 18,000 votes. In previous elections their numbers have been even higher, getting more than 50,000 at the European election in 2005 and more than 26,000 in the 2007 Scottish election. Granted this is nowhere near the half a million BNP votes cast this week but it still shows there is a significant amount of people in favour of this version of Britain.
This is proof, if ever we needed it, of the need for a separation of religion and politics. A quick glance at the Christian Party manifesto provides yet more proof:
It’s important to point out that this lunatics will never get enough support to take over the country, the BNP are nowhere near getting any power and they got 500,000 votes this time round. But that is not the point. If we reform our voting system, in favour of proportional representation, then these people would have even more chance of getting seats. It only takes one seat in parliament to start exerting influence and the religious right-wing is growing, in this country and all over the world.
Britain has grown up. We have accepted equality above dogma. We have moulded our moral and legal positions to suit the needs of society and not to fulfill the mandate of an ancient story book.
I say Good riddance to the Christian Party and their depraved policies.
The scandal surrounded the election yesterday has made me so angry and it is an embarrassment to the country.
Hundreds of people were denied their right to vote when the lack of staff at polling stations meant they were queuing round the block. Many stood in the rain for hours to find themselves turned away because they couldn’t get in before 10pm when the polls close. Others found the polling station had run out of ballot papers anbd had to wait for new ones to come which didn’t leave enough time for them all to vote. Some people found they weren’t even on the list despite actually being registered because the staff had an out of date list!
There has been an absolute shambles of organisation and there is nothing at all that can be said to justify it. To deny people of their right to vote in a “1st world” country for no other reason than the staff weren’t organised enough is disgusting.
In my opinion this is worthy of calling another election. We’re not talking about a couple of people here, HUNDREDS were denied their chance to vote through no fault of their own.
I’m no solicitor but if they have a legal right to something surely they can’t be denied that right without some sort of consequence.
It is somewhat befitting of the past few years of shambolic government that they would be ousted in what is turning out to be a shambolic election.
So I thought I’d join the bandwagon and let everyone know who I just voted for and why.
I’ve just got back from placing my cross on the paper and I have no problem admitting I put it next to the Conservative candidate.
Labour have screwed our country up and don’t deserve another shot at it. The Liberal Democrats are in cloud cuckoo land and their silly immigration policy and love affair with Europe make them a poor choice.
Labour have made our country too liberal and we need to take a step back and fix the social mess they’ve caused. There is only one party who can do this and that’s the Tories.
I have ignored the old people who love to moan about the last Tory government. Apparently they think their last performance means they shouldn’t be voted in again, but surely using this logic Labour shouldn’t be either?
I don’t think it really matters who gets us out of the economy and so my vote fell with David Cameron’s team.
Feel free to disagree with me obviously.
Gordon’s done it again. He’s opened his mouth without thinking. I briefly entertained the thought that he might stop saying ridiculous things in the run up to this election given his already fragile popularity. He obviously can’t help himself.
By calling one of his supporters a bigot for doing nothing more than daring to challenge him he confirms my suspicions that he doesn’t care one single bit about what the country thinks. His hypocritical and two-faced reaction, based on nothing more than a brief meeting which left him nowhere near enough time make such a judgement is classic Gordon Brown.
“Bigot” is a dangerous word to throw at someone for you run the risk of it bouncing straight back at you. It’s definition, after all, is to be “obstinately convinced of the superiority or correctness of one’s own opinions”. That definition fits Brown like a glove. His reaction was to accuse her of intolerance whilst displaying the classic signs of intolerance himself.
Let it be said Gordon is probably not alone here, I have no doubt the others have said some things they shouldn’t have behind closed doors
If Gordon Brown wanted what was best for the country he’d recognise the level of contempt for the public has for him and stand aside. Alas! That is never going to happen, for Gordon wants nothing more than to be elected. This election is about him winning the job of Prime Minister, he is not content with simply being handed it on a plate. He will pursue this end regardless of whether he brings the Labour party down with him and his colleagues won’t stand in his way if they know what’s good for them (and their long term careers).
This is indicative of Gordon, he’s a control freak who can’t stand it when someone disagrees with him and lashes out when he feels wronged. He’d do well to realise most of the country disagree with him most of the time.
